Joan Melendez Misner (she/her/hers) is a Mission Integration Engineer for the Launch Services Program at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Before that, she was a Launch Integration Systems Engineer at Blue Origin and currently working on New Glenn rocket, which is being manufactured at Cape Canaveral, Florida. New Glenn was named after pioneering astronaut John Glenn. It is a single configuration heavy-lift vehicle featuring a reusable first stage with vertical take-off and landing. The project aims at building a road to space for human’s future. Joan concentrated on all aspects of mission operations for New Glenn project. Before stumbling into this career, Joan got a dual bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, and a master’s degree in Systems Engineering. She interned with Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) and was offered to join the DoD Pathways Intern Program, which paid her college tuition and books for the last two years. Upon graduation, Joan was guaranteed a job within the organization by NAVAIR. In her spare time, Joan volunteers throughout the community and is fully involved with STEM Outreach Programs, including judging robotics competitions, mentoring middle/high school aged students, and participating in the “Women in Math” events.
